On January 15th, the Work on Skye team along with the recruitment group were thrilled to host the Work On Skye Launch Event at Portree Community Centre. It was a fantastic day, bringing together local communities and creating a space for learning, connection, and fun. The event featured a wide range of stalls and workshops, each offering something unique. One of the highlights was Lucky2bhere’s Emergency Life-Saving sessions, which were an incredible success. Over 120 young people from local schools participated, learning vital life-saving skills that will no doubt have a lasting impact. It was fantastic to see so many young people engaged—not only in the sessions but also in conversations with the stallholders. There was a real buzz in the room!
The event provided an amazing opportunity for local organisations to showcase their work and connect with the community, and the response was overwhelmingly positive.
Our aim for the event was to create a space that was not only informative but also fun and vibrant. We wanted to ensure that people of all ages and backgrounds felt welcome and excited to be there. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with something for everyone to enjoy. We were especially grateful to Friends of Portree Hospital for catering the event, offering an array of delicious soups, sandwiches, cakes, and other treats. Their support helped create a relaxed environment where everyone could take a moment to enjoy some great food and connect with others.
One of the most rewarding parts of the event was seeing so many people come together from different walks of life, all with a shared goal of supporting and strengthening our local community and healthcare services. The day was a perfect example of what can happen when we all work together, and it left us all feeling inspired and hopeful for the future.
We would love to extend our biggest thank you to everyone who came together to make the event the success that it was. All the stallholders who brought information and joy along with them; BBC Alba, Radio Skye & The West Highland Free Press for coming along to join in and cover the event; Friends of Portree Hospital for the delicious catering and friendly faces; the local schools for their participation and enthusiasm; and the community who came along to support us throughout the day - we couldn’t have done it without any of you!
In the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing more details about the fantastic stallholders who were part of the event and the incredible work they do. From ways to get involved to opportunities for supporting these organisations, there’s so much to look forward to. I encourage you to stay tuned and discover how you can contribute to the wonderful work happening right here on Skye.
